Descriptive statistics and orientation on the CZSO website | RNDr. Ing. Martina Zámková, Ph.D.

Format: Lecture

Objective: The aim of the lecture is to familiarise the audience with basic statistical methods for primary data processing. The sub-objectives are to introduce the basic concepts of descriptive statistics; to demonstrate elementary processing of qualitative and quantitative variables; to calculate basic characteristics of the level and interpretation of the obtained results; to demonstrate creating a questionnaire survey through Google Forms and an introduction to basic orientation on the website of the Czech Statistical Office.

Content: Elementary processing of qualitative and quantitative variables; Basic concepts of descriptive statistics; Google Forms; Nominal, ordinal, discrete and continuous variables; Graphical outputs; Clear organisation of primary data into tables; Basic level characteristics; Interpretation of results; Orientation on the CZSO website; Statistical program Jamovi.

Aids: Computer with Excel, Jamovi and internet; classroom projector; whiteboard

Lecturer: RNDr. Ing. Martina Zámková, Ph.D.

The Einstein's Riddle and other logic problems | Ing. Stanislava Dvořáková, Ph.D.

Form: Seminar

Objective: The seminar aims to develop the participants' ability to think logically and analytically by solving structured logic problems. It mainly focuses on the so-called Einstein's Riddle, which serves as a demonstration of the sequential drawing of conclusions from given conditions.

Content: The seminar focuses on solving logic problems that develop the ability to think systematically. Participants will learn how to work with the so-called Einstein Riddle, a well-known type of logic problem where one has to infer connections step by step from a set of given clues. In addition, they will try out simpler and less traditional problems such as combinations of persons, names, objects and places, linguistic puzzles or situations based on the truth and falsity of statements. An important part of the activity is the active involvement of the participants: they solve some of the problems independently or in groups, some together, and there is also a fun competition format.

Tools: Pencil, paper, smart mobile device

Lecturer:Ing. Stanislava Dvořáková, Ph.D.

How to lie using graphs

Format: Lecture

Objective: The aim of this lecture is to show, with practical examples, how to read data correctly and what to infer from it.

Scope: The lecture will cover basic and advanced graph visualisation, including examples from the media. We will try our hand at measuring visual literacy and look at what techniques are used to deceive the public.

Aids: Computer, data projector

Lecturer:Mgr. et Mgr. Filip Dechterenko, Ph.D.

How not to get lost in the jungle of statistical indicators | RNDr. Ing. Hana Kotoučková, Ph.D.

Form: Lecture

Objective: To introduce the audience to basic statistical concepts that they may encounter in everyday life.

Content: Explain statistical concepts: mean, median, quantiles, variance, standard deviation, coefficient of variation.

Aids: Computer, data projector, possibly whiteboard, markers

Lecturer: RNDr. Ing. Hana Kotoučková, Ph.D.

Pre-Christmas Optimisation for Everyone | Mgr. Andrea Kubišová, Ph.D.

Format: Seminar

Objective: The objective is to introduce the concept of Operations Research to the audience interested in topics in financial mathematics. Finding the best, i.e. optimal, solution to typical economic problems by the elegant method of a simply drawn graph instead of a complex calculation will be demonstrated. A demonstration of the use of Geogebra will be given. Possible demonstration of the use of MS Excel to verify the result.

Content: A brief theoretical introduction is followed by solving a sample economic problem, after which students can solve their own problems independently.

Aids: PC, internet connection, GeoGebra, MS Excel, projector, whiteboard, markers, sheets of paper, writing and possibly drawing materials (ruler and pencil, crayons)

Lecturer: Mgr. Andrea Kubišová, Ph.D.

RPSN mathematical essence, use | RNDr. Radek Stolín, Ph.D.

Format: Lecture

Objective: The aim of the lecture is to introduce the mathematical derivation of the variable annual percentage cost rate and to demonstrate its calculation using practical examples.

Content:

  1. Time value of money
  2. Equivalence of money values
  3. Value equation of investment
  4. Annual percentage rate of cost

Aids: PC with MS Office installed, data projector, whiteboard

Lecturer: RNDr. Radek Stolín, Ph.D.

Statistical data processing | Mgr. Martin Prokop

Format: Lecture

Objective: The objective is to introduce students to basic statistical methods for processing a data set.

Content: Hands-on demonstration of data collection and statistical processing of various types of data. Creating frequency tables and graphs, calculating the characteristics of a data set and interpreting the results obtained.

Aids: computer with Excel, classroom projector

Lecturer: Mgr. Martin Prokop

Basic Data Literacy | Mgr. Miroslav Hanáček

Form: Lecture

Objective: In our everyday world, we encounter a lot of information that we have to process. The goal of this lecture is to introduce students to common ways to visualise information, how to extract information from graphs, and even how to defend against attempts to trick us with graphs.

Content: Hands-on demonstrations of real data sets and their interpretation. An analysis of the data associated with COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021 and the 2021 House of Representatives election. An analysis of the 2023 presidential election, with a focus on the polls before the election itself.

Lecturer: Mgr. Miroslav Hanáček

Golden Ratio| Ing. Stanislava Dvořáková, Ph.D.

Form: Lecture, seminar

Objective: The aim is to introduce the participants to the concept of the golden ratio not only as a mathematical relationship, but also as an aesthetic and natural principle that appears in many areas of human activity and in nature. The lecture develops the ability to see mathematics as a tool for understanding the world around us and demonstrates the connections between mathematics and geometry, biology, art and technology.

Contents (lecture option): This lecture will take participants through the fascinating world of the Golden Ratio - from its mathematical definition and geometric construction to its natural occurrence in nature and human creativity. It explains the connection between the golden ratio and the Fibonacci sequence, showing its role in the arrangement of plant leaves, animal body structure and the proportions of the human body. Special attention is paid to the golden ratio in architecture, art, photography and design. Finally, we touch on its use in optimisation methods. The lecture is accompanied by visual examples and interactive exercises to encourage active engagement and connect mathematics to the real world.

Content (interactive version): This version of the seminar is based on the active involvement of participants. A short theoretical introduction is followed by a series of practical activities that allow the golden ratio to be discovered through measurements, constructions, observations and creative problem solving. During the programme, participants try out geometric constructions, solve problems with a mathematical background and explore the connections of the golden ratio with nature, the human body and the visual arts. The entire workshop is conducted interactively, with an emphasis on playful discovery and connecting mathematics to the real world.
